Otters are also excellent divers. They can remain underwater for several minutes and move with remarkable agility amongst aquatic plants and rocks. Wherever otters maintain stable populations, it often indicates a healthy natural environment with clean water and abundant food resources. For this reason, they are widely regarded as important indicator species for healthy freshwater ecosystems.
