Hello Mrs Imberi, my orangutan mother and her baby arrived today. They are incredibly cute. You may now think this must be an Easter present for a small child. ‘Child’ is correct, but ‘small’ is not: the pair is for my 27-year-old son and his girlfriend. Why? Early in the spring, the two of them bought annual passes for Hanover Zoo. They spent every free moment there watching the orangutan mother and her baby in the ape house and talked about little else. Then, almost two weeks ago, something very sad happened. The mother developed an infection, had to undergo surgery and sadly did not wake up from the anaesthetic. A foster mother had to be found quickly because the staff at Hanover Zoo wanted to avoid hand-rearing the baby if possible, so that it would not become too humanised. An orangutan female at Dortmund Zoo had given birth to a stillborn baby in November but was still able to nurse, so the little one had to move there at short notice. Thankfully, this mother accepted the baby immediately – good fortune for the baby, but sad for my son and his girlfriend because the little one will not return for several years. Last weekend I had an idea. I simply searched online for ‘orangutan with baby’ and found exactly what I was looking for on your website. I was not entirely sure whether ordering it was a good idea or whether it might only revive the pain of the separation, so I photographed the picture and sent it to my son. His immediate reply, ‘I absolutely want it’, showed me that it was the right present after all. Now you know why I placed the order. I simply had to tell you. P.S. Today I had a very friendly telephone conversation with Mr Imberi. He helped me with a problem: despite my greatest efforts, I had been unable to find a single red plush heart, around 5 cm in size and preferably without advertising, either online or in local toy shops. It either did not exist in this form or I would have had to place a commercial order for several thousand. Mr Imberi spontaneously helped me by providing a sample heart that he still had in stock.
